John Travolta has told how he battled for 20 minutes to try to save the life of his 16-year-old son, Jett.

The film star broke his silence to tell of the desperate fight he and paramedics undertook after the boy suffered a convulsion at the family home in the Bahamas.

Issuing a statement via his website on behalf of himself and his film star wife, Kelly Preston, Travolta said: 'Jett was the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for and lit up the lives of everyone he encountered. We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief. We will cherish the time that we had with him for the rest of our lives.'

The couple's lawyer, Michael McDermott, said the star of Grease and Pulp Fiction had told him he had done everything he could to keep Jett alive.

Travolta, 54, had told Mr McDermott that, after Jett was found unconscious in the bathroom on Friday, 'there was a slight pulse so we did all we could... I tried the kiss of life for about 20 minutes. I wouldn't give up.'

Jett had a history of seizures and had reportedly been diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, which leads to inflammation of the blood vessels in children.

The online statement did not refer to Jett's medical history or possible cause of death. But it offered thanks from the Hollywood star, his 46-year-old wife and their eight-year-old-daughter, Ella, for 'many messages of condolence from around the world'.
