George Clooney's brief return to US TV in medical series ER gave the show its highest ratings in two years, as the long-running series draws to a close.
Clooney's comeback episode, which also featured former regulars Noah Wyle (Dr Carter) and Eriq La Salle (Dr Benton) saw a 23% increase in viewers.
ER, US TV's top-rated drama for several years in the 1990s, thrust Clooney, 47, into the Hollywood spotlight.
The actor left in 1999 to pursue a film career, winning an Oscar in 2005.
In the same year that he picked up the award for best supporting actor in Syriana, Clooney was also nominated for best director and best original screenplay for his work on Good Night, and Good Luck.
Ratings slump
ER, set in the emergency room of a fictional Chicago hospital, was the most popular show on television in 1995, averaging 32 million viewers a week.
But - now in its 15th, and final, series - the show barely manages 8 million viewers per episode.
After Clooney made a brief cameo on the show in 2000 - which saw him settling down with his on-screen partner Carol Hathaway (played by Julianna Margulies) - it was widely reported he would not return.
Other former stars of the show have also featured in the final series, including Laura Innes (Dr Weaver) and Anthony Edwards (Dr Greene) - whose character appeared in flashback, having died of brain cancer in 2002.
Thursday's Old Times episode, which also marked a guest appearance by Susan Sarandon, gave ER it best ratings since February 2007 with an audience average of 10.7 million.
The Clooney episode will screen on More4 on 14 May. The final episode will air in the US on 2 April.

The New York Daily News’ Rush & Molloy report that George Clooney and former girlfriend of almost two years Krista Allen have rekindled their romance.
The romance between the two actors began in 2002, when Clooney cast Krista Allen in his directorial debut, “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” his critically acclaimed adaptation of the autobiography of television producer Chuck Barris.
The relationship fell apart in spring of 2004, reportedly at Allen’s hand. Clooney consoled himself with Lisa Snowden for a while, then he and Allen reunited in 2006, only to break up once more and Clooney to have his one-year romance with Sarah Lawson.
Friends of the actor’s tell the Daily News that Clooney and Allen have kept in touch throughout all these years and the actress apparently “just can’t get over” Clooney. The feeling is mutual it seems, as Clooney “really loves her.”
George Clooney, 47, is one of Hollywood’s most notorious bachelors, having sworn to neither tie the knot (again) nor have children before 50. Should he and Allen, 37, reunite, he may well play daddy to the actress’s 11-year-old son, Jake, with production manager Justin Moritt. The same friendly source told the Daily News that Clooney and Jake get along very well.
Clooney was married only once in his life, in the 1980s, to actress Talia Balsam. He has loved a string of beauties though over the decades, including Kelly Preston, Charlize Theron and Renee Zellweger.

George Clooney Left Shaken in Caribbean Earthquake

Hollywood hunks George Clooney and Ewan McGregor were left shaken after an earthquake hit the location of their latest movie.
The pair, who are currently working on Grant Heslov's political satire Men Who Stare At Goats on the Caribbean island, are believed to have been woken by the quake that hit 6.1 on the Richter scale -- the biggest in the past 20 years in Puerto Rico.
The US Geological Survey believes the quake's center was about 40 northwest of Anegada in the British Virgin Islands. There have been no reported injuries.
George, 47, and Ewan, 37, didn't let the natural disaster get in their way -- they immediately went back to work, reports British newspaper The Sun.
Men Who Stare At Goats, an adaptation of journalist Jon Ronson's book, is set for release in 2010. Kevin Spacey is also reportedly set to star in the flick.

George Clooney's ex girlfriend Sarah Larson has said that she is still friends with the Hollywood star.
In an interview with Hello! magazine, Larson said that she remains on good terms with Clooney despite the recent split.
She said: "George is a great guy, a wonderful person. I don't regret spending time with him.
"We still remain friends and have kept in touch. In fact, we spoke over the phone a couple of days ago."
Larson also joked: "Most people know George has a great sense of humour and is an adept storyteller. But I will always love his extraordinary dance moves."
Larson also dismissed the long-running media speculation that the couple were due to get married, saying: "We were never engaged."

The former Fear Factor winner has revealed that she did not meet Clooney for the first time at the June 2007 'Ocean's Thirteen' premiere at the Palms Casino Resort on Las Vegas, as has been publicised by the media.
Rather, she said, her first meeting with the Hollywood hunk was much earlier than that.
"It was on his birthday three or four years ago at Whiskey at [Vegas's] Green Valley Ranch," People quoted Larson, as telling the Las Vegas Review Journal.

George Clooney has dismissed reports suggesting that he is set to make a return to medical drama 'ER'.
According to People magazine, the 46-year-old actor told 'Entertainment Tonight' that he had never even discussed the possibility of returning to the show as Dr Doug Ross.
Clooney said: "No, never - we never even talked about it. No one has ever asked me."
"It's the funniest thing. The story came out, and I was like 'Where did that come from?' It was everywhere - I mean in one day."

George Clooney has addressed a list of outrageous rumors during an interview with the US edition of Esquire magazine, after the interviewer asked him about several stories that had popped up a 'Google' search of the famous movie star.
People.com had a sneak peak at the interview with Clooney, in which the 45-year-old talked about his highly-publicised dispute with Fabio, who said he could beat Clooney up.
"Yeah, that's probably true," Clooney responds.
"He's a big guy. There is a moment when you are actually in the argument and you're thinking, If I do get beaten down by Fabio, that will be far worse than the pain. I wouldn't shake that."
Clooney also discusses a comment Donald Trump made about his height on CNN's 'Larry King Live', saying, "I've met Donald Trump once, and I was sitting at a table. He came over, shook my hand, and walked away. I guess I looked about three foot five sitting at that table."
Esquire also discovered a website that claims Clooney is "gay, gay, gay".

George Clooney has been given the chance to live out his sporting dream and spend the summer playing baseball.
The movie star was offered a contract to play for Ohio minor league team the Dayton Dragons during a recent TV interview with top producer Peter Guber, who owns the team.
The Batman producer threw Clooney a curveball on U.S. cable show Shootout, hurling him a team hat and pitching him the chance to play baseball.
Guber said, "We're ready to sign you up, anytime ou're ready." The offer isn't as bizarre as it seems - Clooney was considered a prospect for Ohio's major league team the Cincinnati Reds when he was a teenager.

Clooney Proves Private Health Records Not So Private

Some 27 workers at a New Jersey hospital were suspended Wednesday after reportedly taking a peek at George Clooney's confidential medical records while the actor was being treated there following a motorcycle accident.
None of the employees, each suspended for four weeks, were doctors treating Clooney, administrators said, raising a host of questions about who can view private medical information and what measures are in place to protect patients' privacy.
Clooney was taken to Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, N.J. Sept. 21 after he and passenger Sarah Larson were injured when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a car. Clooney broke a rib and Larson broke her foot.
Hospital administrators said the confidentiality breach was discovered after a routine audit.
"We conduct audits on a regular basis to make sure our systems are protecting individuals' rights," Eurice Rojas, the hospital's vice president of external affairs, told The Associated Press. "We conducted an audit immediately with respect to this situation and that resulted in [the investigation]."
Since 1996, when confidential medical information started getting stored on computer systems, insurance companies and hospitals have been required by federal law to maintain the privacy of health records.
"Privacy rules and the need for privacy exist to encourage individuals to seek medical care and be open and honest about their symptoms and concerns. Only through that open exchange can people get proper care," said Susan McAndrews, deputy director of health-information privacy at the Department of Health and Human Service's Office of Civil Rights.
Under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, the department is charged with ensuring that insurance companies and health care providers don't violate the law by allowing unauthorized employees to gain access to patient records.
McAndrews said an employee's ability to get access to information about an individual patient depends largely on how closely the employee is involved in that person's treatment.

A U.S. hospital where George Clooney was treated after he was knocked off his motorbike has accused about 40 staff, including doctors, of inappropriately looking at the movie star's chart, a union said on Wednesday.
The Health Professional and Allied Employees union in New Jersey said seven of its members had been suspended for a month without pay by the Palisades Medical Center -- across the Hudson River from Manhattan -- over the incident.
Clooney, 46, who won an Oscar last year for his supporting role in the political thriller "Syriana," fractured a rib and his companion, Sarah Larson, broke her foot when the two were knocked off his motorbike by a car late last month.
Union president Ann Twomey said in a statement the union's nurses and health professionals may have been authorized to view Clooney's chart. The union was investigating.
"While we believe that individuals need to be held accountable if they violated patient privacy, we also believe that the hospital had a responsibility to establish proper systems to protect patient privacy," Twomey said.
"The hospital instead rushed to judgment and imposed harsh economic penalties, instead of working to prevent future breaches of security," she said.
Hospital officials were not available for comment.
In statement to local media, Clooney said: "While I very much believe in a patient's right to privacy, I would hope that this could be settled without suspending medical workers."
