Dick Martin, the comedian who along with Dan Rowan created the zany late-'60s variety show Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, died Saturday of respiratory complications. He was 86.
Laugh-In, the show that made stars out of Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin, was famous for its madcap sensibility, stream-of-consciousness pacing, and catchphrases (most famously, ''Sock it to me!''). Between the dancing girls, absurdist poetry, and satirical skits, Martin and Rowan would banter, with Rowan playing straight man to Martin's eccentric. After the show folded in 1973, and his standup partnership with Rowan amicably ended in '77, Martin turned his eye toward TV directing, eventually earning credits on Newhart, In the Heat of the Night, Archie Bunker's Place, and Family Ties.
