Brad Renfro died following an overdose of heroin and morphine, a Los Angeles coroner has ruled.
The 25-year-old, who starred in films including Bully, The Client and Sleepers, was found dead at his home last month.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office ruled the actor's death was accidental.
Renfro, who had just finished work on Bret Easton Ellis novel adaptation The Informers, had battled drug and alcohol problems for some years.
He served 10 days in jail in 2006 after pleading no contest to driving while intoxicated and guilty to attempted possession of heroin, the latter charge coming after being arrested in Los Angeles' Skid Row area.
In 1998, he was charged with cocaine and marijuana possession and avoided jail time with a plea bargain.
And in January 2001, he was put on probation and ordered to pay $4,000 for repairs to a 45-foot yacht he and a friend tried to steal in Florida.
Renfro began his film career aged 12, starring opposite Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones in mafia drama The Client.
